Issues that Matter

When we speak about issues that matter in the classroom we can often associate them with issues that matter in life. It is so easy to ignore these difficult conversations but as I have said before and I will say again, teaching is not a job where you can take the easy way out. In order to do right by our students we need to talk about things like LGBTQ+ rights, slavery, sexism, racism, and many more topics that have been labeled as "touchy subjects".  In a world that begs for our silence, be the voice that is heard! There is nothing wrong with teaching our students about issues going on in our world today, issues that they will 100% face or hear about in the future. More often than not the issues that require the most attention are the ones that we are told not to speak about and we cannot let this be the case. The change the world needs starts with us, in our classroom, in the minds of our young students. The video I chose to watch for this module showed a fishbowl activity where students were allowed to review material for some time and then speak on their ideas and beliefs from that topic. Activities like this promote a strong and healthy learning environment! A place for students to share their honest beliefs and allow them to be discussed amongst others, this is the type of classroom every educator should strive for. When we talk about these issues we are giving students the power to be their most true and authentic self, to not be ashamed of who they are, and supporting them in the process. We have the potential to change the future, to change the taboo idea that some subjects need to be limited in the classroom, to change the world. I plan on using that potential and turning it into something great, and I hope you do too.
